U of A Small Business Center Helps Entrepreneur Lay Solid Foundation for Success
With a background in agribusiness and logistics, Justin Hays brings over a decade of experience to his new venture. Raised on a farm, Hays earned a degree in agribusiness and spent 10 years working in produce logistics, ensuring that fresh produce reached grocery store shelves efficiently. After a decade in the corporate world, Hays decided to depart from the corporate scene and grow something of his own.
Identifying an opportunity in the booming construction sector, Hays decided to launch an equipment rental business, H&M Equipment Solutions. After conducting thorough research, he connected with the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center at the U of A (ASBTDC, UAF) to turn his business idea into reality.
As a first-time business owner, Hays acknowledged the challenges ahead but was determined to build a company that emphasized superior service and individual attention, qualities that could compete with even the largest corporate firms.
The support from ASBTDC, particularly from consultant Lori Lieblong, was instrumental in his journey. The ASBTDC team provided critical assistance in refining his business plan, ensuring it was comprehensive and prepared for any challenges. Through detailed spreadsheet training, Hays gained extensive knowledge of financial reports and forecasts, essential components for any startup. This guidance broadened his understanding of the various aspects of running a successful business.
Hays reflects positively on his experience with ASBTDC, noting the value of each interaction. The process taught him the importance of patience and thoroughness, key characteristics for any entrepreneur.
Hays advises other small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs to persevere. "Nothing worth having is easy," Hays said, "so dig in and chase your dream."
While H&M Equipment Solutions is still in its early stages of business, Hays is aware of the challenges ahead. With a solid foundation and the support of ASBTDC, the company is positioned for success. Hays is dedicated to offering the personalized care and attention needed to stand out in the industry.
