Poultry Science Students Earn Presentation Honors at PSA Meeting

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Five poultry science students, including four doctoral students, from the U of A's Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences were recognized for outstanding presentations at this summer's Poultry Science Association annual meeting.

Brooke Bodle, Katie Hilton, Basanta Raj Wagle and Jordan Weil received outstanding oral presentation awards while Callie Shawhan was recognized for outstanding poster presentation.

Bodle, a senior graduate assistant working with assistant professor Sam Rochell, presented "Efficacy of Carbohydrase Enzymes in Diets Varying in Ingredient Composition When Fed to Coccidiosis Vaccinated Broilers."

Hilton, a senior graduate assistant working with poultry nutritionist Craig Coon, presented "The Comparison of Two Net Energy Equations of Broilers Fed Exogenous Composite Enzyme and Exogenous Amaylase."

Wagle, a doctoral program assistant advised by professor Dan Donoghue, presented "Phytochemicals Modulate Campylobacter Jejuni Proteome Critical for Biofilm Formation."

Weil, a senior graduate assistant also under the direction of Coon, presented "Metabolism and Nutrition, Amino Acids."

Shawhan, a senior working with professor Sami Dridi, presented "Neuropeptide Y is Expressed in Chicken Liver and Regulates Hepatic Lipogenesis."

The meeting was held in July in San Antonio, Texas. The PSA is a professional organization consisting of approximately 1,800 educators, scientists, extension specialists, industry researchers, administrators, producers and college students committed to advancing the poultry industry.

Bumpers College's Department of Poultry Science and the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science include teaching, research and extension facilities at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center and the John W. Tyson Poultry Science Building. The department provides the curriculum for B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs.
