Many scholars struggle to publish their first book because of a lack of confidence, explains Melody Herr, head of the Office of Scholarly Communication. Herr, who has more than 16 years of experience working for scholarly publishers, will be presenting on this topic at the next Research Over Easy Breakfast on from 7:45-9 a.m.Tuesday, April 2, in the Arkansas Union room 512-513. Registration is required.

"Researchers have confidence in their experience, and in the value of their research," Herr says. "What they need is confidence in their skills as authors."

Herr's presentation, "Crafting Your Book Proposal and Attracting a Publisher," includes information on

  • identifying publishers which can serve your goals best
  • creating a book proposal that highlights your expertise and the unique features of your research
  • crafting a cover letter that captures an editor's attention

Research Over Easy is an opportunity for faculty to have breakfast with Dan Sui, the vice chancellor for research an innovation, and his leadership team. The monthly event includes discussions of various topics related to the research enterprise at the University of Arkansas.

This month's Research Over Easy event is sponsored jointly by the Office for Research and Innovation and the Office for Faculty Development and Enhancement.

Herr is also available to meet with faculty individually to develop strategies for securing a book contract. Email her to set up an appointment.
