Fall 2023 Honors College Forum to Examine Health Risks in Our Communities
Next semester, honors students will have the opportunity to investigate public health in their communities to promote the well-being of all residents. Public Health and Safety as It Relates to You looks at the various environmental, social and infectious hazards that surround us and considers how we might protect ourselves and others.
Class will meet Tuesdays 5-6:40 p.m. the first eight weeks of fall 2023.
Taught by Dr. Huda Sharaf, medical director of the Pat Walker Health Center, the course also aims to educate students on navigating the medical system and becoming knowledgeable consumers of healthcare. "To be informed is to be empowered: if we don't know what the risks are, how can we make a change?" noted Sharaf. The class will also provide key insights for students in a variety of majors who may go on to shape the public health in their communities. "Our students are our future leaders and activists who will hopefully promote programs, community education and legislation to lessen the public health risks facing us today," she said.
John Treat, director of interdisciplinary and curricular learning, reiterated the importance of public health and safety today. "From recent mass shootings to the COVID pandemic, we have had a series of powerful reminders about the importance of public health and safety. This course lets students acquaint themselves with the methodologies and tools that can create positive change for millions of people," Treat explained.
This spring forum does not require an application, but seats are limited. Interested honors students are encouraged to register as soon as possible to guarantee a seat.
