Interested in Learning How to Sew? Enroll in a Specialized Career and Technical Education Course

Have you ever thought you would like to learn how to sew? Would you like to learn how to teach others how to sew? If so, CATE 4803: Problems in Career and Technical Education-Teaching Apparel Production is a great course for you.

This class meets once a week, every Tuesday from 8-10:45 a.m. Students enrolled in this course will learn about a variety of topics including, but not limited to:

• Apparel production and alteration
• Characteristics of textiles and how they affect launder and care
• Pedagogical concepts associated with facilitating a clothing laboratory experience

This course is intended to familiarize students with the concepts found in the fashion and interior design curriculum content frameworks distributed by the Arkansas Department of Secondary and Elementary Education and prepare preservice teachers to facilitate clothing construction experiences in secondary classrooms. Problem- and project-based learning will provide the foundation for content delivery in this course. Students will be creating a variety of projects including aprons, pillowcases, coffee cozies and pin cushions into a portfolio showcasing a variety of sewing skills, as well as a summative project based on individual students' interests and skills.
