Celebrate Asian Pacific Heritage Month With the Children's Literature Collection

During the month of May, the University Libraries Children's Literature Collection is celebrating Asian Pacific Heritage Month. A virtual book display created by Tucker Moretta, a libraries graduate assistant, working with Laura Cameron, education librarian, features books, primary sources, background information and lesson plans for teachers. Physical items are also on display on the lobby level of Mullins Library, in the northwest corner of the building.

"Far from a homogenous group, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders represent many national origins and ethnicities, all with their own rich histories, cultures and traditions," Cameron said. "We hope that this month's displays will help the university community learn more about the experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and will foster conversations with children about diversity, cultural awareness and the complex history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in our country."

Featured titles include They Called Us Enemy by George Takei and The Land of Forgotten Girls by Erin Entrada Kelly.

The Children's Literature Collection includes books suitable for children pre-K to 12th grade. The collection is organized into eight sections to allow for easier browsing: picture books, early readers, chapter and middle grade books, young adult novels, graphic novels, traditional tales, biographies and non-fiction. Each section is identified with a five-digit code, color-coded spine stickers and shelf signage.
