University Of Arkansas Honors Teach For Arkansas Graduates

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, honored graduates of the Teach for Arkansas program at a recent reception in Helena on the campus of Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas. Eighteen graduates had been awarded the Master of Arts in Teaching degree through a distance education program offered on the PCCUA campus by the College of Education and Health Professions, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

Teach for Arkansas was designed to facilitate completion of the MAT by Delta residents committed to teaching in their home area. Initiated by the College of Education and Health Professions, Teach for Arkansas is a nationally recognized, innovative collaboration with Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas. UA faculty members deliver the MAT coursework to community college students through state-of-the-art distance education technology and on-site instruction in Helena.

"We are proud of the graduates of the Teach for Arkansas program," said Reed Greenwood, dean of the UA College of Education and Health Professions. "They are committed professionals who are making a vital contribution to Delta schools."

Members of the 2002 graduating class of MATs will be teaching in elementary schools in the Helena/West Helena, Marvell, Marianna, Lakeview and Elaine school districts. Graduates also staff the Phillips County Development Center.

In addition to the University of Arkansas, the Walton Family Foundation and the Southwestern Bell Foundation have provided essential funding for the Teach for Arkansas program.
