Study Ranks UA Walton College Research in Marketing Scholarship in Top Ten Nationally
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Faculty in the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas have been ranked second in number of research articles published in the Journal of Marketing Education and fifth in the Marketing Education Review.
Articles in the journals report research on educational practice, technology and learning. The findings were published in the spring 2004 issue of Marketing Education Review in an article entitled "The Scholarship of Teaching: A Study of Marketing Education Journal Publications."
"Our aim is to examine which institutions foster scholarship of teaching," said authors of the study, Faye S. McIntyre, associate professor of marketing, State University of West Georgia, and John F. (Jeff) Tanner, Jr., associate professor of marketing, Baylor University.
According to their study, Clemson University ranked first in the number of articles published in the Journal of Marketing Education, and Georgia Southern University ranked first in publications in Marketing Education Review.
However, the University of Arkansas ranked high on both lists, a feat matched by few other institutions.
"It is interesting to note that only three universities, University of Arkansas, Texas A&M University and Texas Christian University, appear in both journals' top ten lists for total authorship count," said Thomas Jensen, Wal-Mart Lecturer in Retailing and chair of the Walton College marketing and logistics department. Only the University of Arkansas and Texas A&M appear on both top ten lists by number of articles."
At universities nationwide, there has been a continuing debate about how much time faculty should spend on research and how much should be spent on teaching. With new mission-based standards set by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, many business schools are refocusing on the quality of their teaching.
According to Jensen, the rankings show that "our faculty are dedicated not only to providing effective learning opportunities that produce graduates ready for real world jobs, but also to contributing to the research and scholarship of teaching and learning in their field."
"Our faculty have been highly productive in their research, including the 'scholarship of teaching.' We were recently acknowledged by the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing as being one of the top faculty in public policy and marketing research articles. These acknowledgements are a strong indicator of our commitment to excellence in scholarship inside and outside the classroom," added Jensen.
Walton College marketing faculty ranked fourth in number of non-duplicate article count in the Journal of Marketing Education and sixth in the Marketing Education Review.
In the article, David L. Kurtz, university professor and holder of the R.A. & Vivian Young Chair, ranked fourth in specific faculty research productivity. A leading scholar in marketing education, Kurtz not only researches successful teaching and learning practices and trends, but also has been the author or co-author of 46 books, two of them the best-selling marketing textbooks in the world.
Jensen said: "I am delighted to tell potential students that they will be learning business and marketing from the man who wrote the books, the books more students learn about marketing from than any other textbooks in the world."
