"Every BODY Belongs" is the theme of this year's National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, observed Feb. 23 through March 1. This annual observance is part of the National Eating Disorders Association's awareness campaign and brings attention to eating disorders and challenges stigma while providing hope and support to those impacted.
According to the association, approximately 30 million Americans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. The National Eating Disorders Association notes that eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, and that every 52 minutes one person dies as a direct consequence of an eating disorder.
At the U of A, the Eating Disorder Treatment Team at Pat Walker Health Center will host two events open to students, faculty and staff to raise awareness and to offer support to the U of A community and those affected by eating disorders.
"We want students to know they're not alone," said Debbie Deere, M.D., certified eating disorders specialist and medical director for the Eating Disorder Treatment Team at Pat Walker Health Center. "Through these events we can bring attention to eating disorders on campus and start conversations that can help students get the care they need."
"It's about empowerment, awareness and putting the spotlight on the resources available to our students," said Cassidy Mansur, LPC, lead eating disorder mental health clinician with the university's Counseling and Psychological Services. "This is also an opportunity to learn more about the signs and symptoms so you can recognize when a person may need help."
