Catastrophic Leave Program to Phase Out by 2029

The U of A will begin phasing out the Catastrophic Leave Program over the next three years. This program has provided vital support for employees during serious medical situations, and the generosity of employees who have donated hours over the years is greatly appreciated.

The decision to phase out the program is part of a systemwide effort to align benefits with sustainable practices. While other benefits such as Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, Paid Parental Leave, FMLA and accrued leave remain available, the university recognizes these do not fully replace catastrophic leave.

"We are committed to championing stronger benefits that fully support our employees," said Amy Ochoa, associate vice chancellor for Human Resources. "The phase-out of the Catastrophic Leave Program is difficult, but the extended timeline is a fair approach that allows us to explore alternative benefits that can supplement our other generous leave programs."

The Office of Human Resources appreciates feedback on benefits and leave as part of this change. Employees are encouraged to complete the Employee Benefits Feedback Survey to have their voice be a part of the conversation.

Key Details On This Change

  • Applications to utilize the program will continue through June 30, 2029. Employees with approved applications before that date may use hours until they return to work, exhaust their benefit or until Dec. 31, 2029.

  • Donations to the program have not been accepted since 2023.

  • After the program ends, unused hours in the program will expire.

  • The Employee Benefits Feedback Survey will close on Feb. 27, 2026.
