Holiday Poinsettia

The U of A Department of Horticulture invites the community to its first annual Holiday Poinsettia Sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 4-5 at the Hort Greenhouse, 1005 W. Meade St., Fayetteville, AR 72703.

All poinsettias are grown by students in the Greenhouse Container Crops course taught by professor Ryan Dickson. This course is designed to help students build practical skills, deepen their scientific knowledge and connect horticulture theory with real-world applications. Students gain technical and hands-on experience in the commercial production and management of floriculture container crops.

Throughout the semester, students engage in a series of experiential learning activities that culminate in the production and sale of Christmas poinsettias and other fall ornamental crops. In the process, they learn what it takes to produce high-quality plants, as well as how to make informed, data-driven decisions in production and marketing. Beyond the classroom, the course introduces students to the broader Green Industry, which includes ornamental flowering, nursery, potted and landscape plants. The Green Industry is a significant horticultural sector both locally and across the U.S., offering students a variety of exciting career paths.

Dickson emphasizes that the course not only teaches plant production skills but also fosters awareness of industry opportunities and cultivates problem-solving, business and marketing skills that prepare students for success in horticulture careers. Students, staff and community members interested in the course or in learning more about the Green Industry are encouraged to reach out to the department.

All 100% of the proceeds from the Holiday Poinsettia Sale support the following year's class and other student and teaching activities in the department. Poinsettia varieties available include Freedom Red, Freedom White, Prestige Red, FabYULEous, Jack Frost, Frozen and Premium Ice Crystal, with select cultivars offered in multiple container sizes.

Customers can pre-order online for pickup during the sale via the Online Order Portal or purchase in person at the greenhouse.
