Campus Community Invited to Honor Servicemembers During Veterans Week
Several events are scheduled on and around Nov. 11, Veterans Day, at the University of Arkansas and in the Northwest Arkansas community to honor U.S. veterans of military service. The campus community is invited to the following events:
-
Saturday, Nov. 8: Join several veterans organizations for the First Annual Veterans Day Parade and Trade Show. Parade will begin at 11 a.m. along Dickson Street. Featured participants include Mayor Molly Rawn; Grand Marshall Capt. Cliff Mosier, a veteran of the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars serving in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard; and emcee Joshua Pineda from FOX24. A trade show of local veteran resources will immediately follow the parade on the Upper Ramble. The public is invited to bring chairs, wear patriotic apparel and wave the American Flag to show support to all the veterans in the parade, the trade show or in the crowd.
-
Monday, Nov. 10: The Armed Forces Alumni Society will host its annual Veterans Day Military Ball from 5-7:30 p.m. Tickets are required. The AFAS, a volunteer organization composed of alumni who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces, organizes this event to foster community and connection among members of the Razorback community. The evening will include a social hour, traditional military ceremonies, a semiformal dinner, a distinguished keynote speaker, awards presentations and after-dinner entertainment.
-
Tuesday, Nov. 11: The Veteran and Military-Affiliated Student Center will host a breakfast for all student veterans from 8-11 a.m. in The Outpost, part of the VMSC location at the Garland Garage Shops.
-
Tuesday, Nov. 11: The Associated Student Government is hosting a Veterans Day Celebration on the Union Mall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be free snacks and drinks and a service opportunity to show our appreciation for veterans and their service. This event will showcase resources our community has for student veterans, faculty and the veteran-affiliated community.
-
Tuesday, Nov. 11: The Armed Forces Employee and Colleague Resource Group is hosting a Veterans Day Luncheon in the Verizon Ballroom from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are free, but registration is required.

Did you know?
Beginning in 1919, Nov. 11 was celebrated as "Armistice Day" in the United States and many other countries to mark the day an armistice agreement was signed, ending fighting in World War I. It went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Though Nov. 11 became a national holiday in 1938 to honor veterans of WWI, the name was changed to "Veterans Day" in the U.S. in 1954 and broadened into a day to honor all military veterans. Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died in service, Veterans Day honors all who have served, both living and deceased.
Organizers hope to see you around campus as they say THANK YOU to all those who have served.
