Doctoral Student Conducts Interdisciplinary Research to Fight Muscle Loss in Old Age

With a background in exercise physiology research and more than a decade of strength training experience, PJ Koopmans found himself interested in learning more about muscle function in the context of exercise, aging and disease.

It was this curiosity that led him to the cell and molecular biology graduate program at the U of A, where he now investigates the molecular mechanisms that regulate muscle mass and exercise adaptations in hopes of finding solutions to combat muscle atrophy throughout the lifespan.
