Are you looking for a meaningful way to get involved on campus and have a real impact on someone's life?

Consider becoming a peer mentor with EMPOWER!

EMPOWER is a four-year, non-degree program for students with mild intellectual disabilities. Students in the EMPOWER Program live on campus, attend classes and fully participate in university life—just like you.

One of the most impactful parts of their college journey is the connection they form with peer mentors.

As a mentor, you'll build impactful relationships, develop leadership skills and help create a more inclusive campus community. Whether you're helping with classwork, sharing lunch together or offering support in preparing for the workplace, your time and energy truly matter.

EMPOWER is recruiting volunteer mentors for fall 2025 and would love to have you on board!

The program is currently recruiting for the following mentorship areas:

  • Academic mentor: Help students stay organized, understand assignments, use Blackboard, strengthen their study skills, etc.
  • Social mentor: Engage in fun activities on campus, grab lunch together, attend campus events, etc.
  • Health & wellness mentor: Encourage healthy habits through workouts, nature walks, discussing nutrition, etc.
  • Career mentor: Support students in building job skills and preparing for workplace readiness.

Peer mentors should expect to commit three hours per week for the duration of the fall semester. They must also pass a background check and keep weekly case notes.

If interested, please fill out an application.

Those interested can email Amanda Wallace at aw008@uark.edu or Kenzie Moser at km336@uark.edu with any questions.
