Two Ph.D. Food Science Students Secure National Awards at Phi Tau Sigma Meeting

Two U of A Ph.D. food science graduate students, Arda Tuhanioglu and Sumanjot Kaur, won national awards from Phi Tau Sigma, the honor society of food science and technology.

Tuhanioglu won the $1,000 Phi Tau Sigma Student Achievement Scholarship. This award is given to a student who shows exceptional scholastic achievement and dedication to Phi Tau Sigma.

Kaur won first place in the Phi Tau Sigma Speedy Science competition. This competition allows students to present current or future research in an engaging and approachable manner in three minutes.

Kaur's presentation was titled "The impact of supercritical carbon dioxide processing on the aroma and physicochemical properties of soybean flour."

The Phi Tau Sigma Speedy Science Competition was organized by the University of Minnesota Phi Tau Sigma Chapter on April 2, 2025.

Both students are in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences. They work under the guidance of assistant professor Ali Ubeyitogullari, who is a member of the faculty in the college and a researcher and scientist with the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, the research arm of the U of A System Division of Agriculture. Dr. Ubeyitogullari directs the Food Engineering for Health Lab.

Phi Tau Sigma, established in 1953, is the national honor society for food science and technology. Phi Tau Sigma is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and its purpose is to inspire achievement in the discipline of food science.
