International Employees Celebrated During Appreciation Luncheon
As part of International Education Week, the International Employee Resource Group and the Graduate School and International Education at the U of A hosted an appreciation luncheon on Nov. 20 to celebrate the contributions of international employees to the university.
The luncheon, attended by over 50 international faculty and staff, recognized the diverse perspectives and experiences international employees bring to campus. Guests enjoyed a complimentary lunch featuring a diverse array of cuisines from around the world while hearing from campus leaders discussing the importance of international faculty and staff.
"The university's international employees are instrumental in fulfilling our land-grant mission of providing educational opportunity in Arkansas," said Terry Martin, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. "Our international community advances our research excellence and our student success initiatives through their different experiences, views and backgrounds. You help our students gain new knowledge and insights that help them become global citizens, and you further the university's vision of building a better community and world through the very important work you do every day."
"Our international colleagues bring more than just expertise and talent to this institution — they bring unique perspectives, rich cultural experiences and invaluable global connections that enrich every corner of our campus," said Ed Pohl, dean of the Graduate School and International Education, during his remarks at the event. "From the classroom to the lab, from student support services to administration, your dedication to excellence and your diverse voices shape the very fabric of this university."
"In a world that is increasingly interconnected, our strength lies in our ability to learn from and collaborate across cultures and borders," he added. "The University of Arkansas is proud to be a global campus."
Adnan Alrubaye, assistant professor of poultry science and the president of the group, also spoke at the event.
"Each of you plays an essential role in enriching our campus community and helping us grow into a truly global institution," he said. "You embody the values of inclusivity, excellence and collaboration that we strive for as a university, and for that, we are immensely grateful. We look forward to continuing our work together, building on the strong foundation of respect and support that you have helped to create."
Established in 2022, the International Employee Resource Group plays a vital role in fostering a sense of community for international employees on campus. Reporting to Equal Opportunity, Compliance and Title IX, the group is dedicated to enhancing belonging, awareness and inclusivity for its members.
"International Education Week reminds us that the University of Arkansas thrives through the unique voices and global insights of our international faculty, staff and students," said Dr. Angela Mosley-Monts, director compliance training and equal opportunity programs. "The efforts of the International Employee Resource Group further amplify this impact by fostering inclusivity for all, cultural exchange and collaboration, creating a more connected and enriched campus environment."
"We are committed to fostering a sense of belonging through our Employee Resource Groups, which focus on building community, celebrating culture, advancing careers and promoting care for all employees," said Danielle Williams, associate vice chancellor and executive director for equal opportunity, compliance and Title IX.
The event was held as part of International Education Week, a week of events held Nov. 18-22 showcasing the importance of international education on campus. This year's theme was "Discover: The World in Arkansas, Arkansas in the World," inviting the campus community to discover the transformational impact of international education. The Office of International Students and Scholars in the GSIE coordinates events for the week, complemented by campus departments and units that host their own events.
