Bumpers College Students Participate in Meat Science Beyond Fresh Meats Course at Tyson

Eleven total graduate and undergraduate students completed the course at Tyson Foods, including students in food science, animal science and poultry science.

Students in different majors from the U of A's Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences recently participated in the Tyson Beyond Fresh Meats Short Course held at the Tyson Food's Discovery Center in Springdale.

The course was "Batter, Breaded and Marinated Poultry & Red Meat."

Graduate students participating were Manita Adhikari, Kavita Patil, Lydia Rockers, Chetanjot Romana, Erin Ramsay and Surabhi Wason in food science and Sarah Shoup in animal science.

Undergradutes participating were Jordan Looper and Jimena Rodriquez, animal science; Miguel Montero, poultry science; and Maria Laura Vargas Rojas, food science.

The received an in-depth, hands-on experience in the dinner sausage category and also education in what research and development food scientists do on a daily basis.

The course was open to students interested in learning more about the meat industry.

The course is part of the Student Training and Education Program sponsored by the American Meat Science Association. STEP events focus on providing students with skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the meat industry, including learning the latest industry trends and best practices, developing communication and problem-solving skills, and providing attendees with necessary resources and connections to succeed in the industry.
