Record Number of Faculty Participate in 2021 TFSC Teaching Camp
A record number of faculty participated in the Teaching and Faculty Support Center's Teaching Camp at Eureka Springs.
A record number of U of A faculty participated in the 2021 TFSC Teaching Camp, held Aug. 3-5 in Eureka Springs, with 80 participating in person and 31 joining remotely via Zoom. The theme of Teaching Camp this year was "Back to the Classroom."
Headline speaker Shane Robinson, professor and associate director of the Oklahoma State University Institute for Teaching and Learning Excellence, provided the keynote presentation on "Engaging Students for Successful Learning Experiences." Faculty were then invited to participate in sessions in one of three tracks: Inclusive Education, co-sponsored by the Division of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (with Brian Dewsbury, Florida Atlantic University); Student Engagement and Motivation (with Shane Robinson); and Peer Review of Teaching (with Tracy Wacker, University of Michigan - Flint).
In addition to these three tracks, the following individual workshops were presented by U of A faculty:
- Student Engagement — Tish Pohl, Samantha Robinson, Chris Shields
- Teaching Large Classes — Lorraine Brewer, Tim Kral, and Kate Walker
- Creating Opportunities for Students to Explore Culture in any Class — Paul Calleja, Lynn Meade, and Rocio Paez
- Managing Challenging Students — Deb Korth, Leigh Southward, and Jenn Veilleux
- Blackboard Tips and Techniques — Heather Walker, Shelly Walters, and Kathryn Zawisza
- Creating a Culturally Competent Campus — Margaret Butcher and Jackie Mosley
- Assessing Student Learning: Beyond Exams — Jeanne Eichler and Karl Schubert

In another Teaching Camp highlight, Kathryn Zawisza, instructor in philosophy and director of academic technology and innovation with IT Services, received the 2021 Ro Di Brezzo Excellence in Service to Teaching Award.
This annual award recognizes an individual who has provided outstanding service to campus teaching through programs conducted by the TFSC. In 2020-21, Zawisza presented five TFSC workshop sessions and, along with Shelly Walters, provided technical assistance with remote delivery of all Teaching Camp workshop sessions.
Teaching Camp is an annual faculty teaching development program sponsored by the Wally Cordes Teaching and Faculty Support Center. The TFSC covers all expenses (travel, lodging and meals) for participating faculty.
