Twelve Students Receive Scholarships With Funds Raised From CSES Delta Scholarship Golf Classic

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The 19th Annual Delta Scholarship Golf Classic raised more than $17,500 for scholarships for University of Arkansas students majoring in crop science or environmental, soil, and water science in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences.

The tournament was July 20 at The Ridges at Village Creek in Wynne, Arkansas. Coordinated each year by friends and alumni from the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences, the event has raised more than $420,000 and funded 176 scholarships since 2000.

"The 19th Delta Classic Scholarship golf tournament at The Ridges golf course was another successful tournament," said tournament director Glenn Kernodle, Gowan USA north delta sales rep. "Again we had overwhelming support from the agricultural industry, the local northeast Arkansas community and those that work within the U of A system. The entire Delta Classic committee is very grateful to The Ridges golf course for hosting and helping us again with the tournament."

Twelve students earned scholarships for 2018-19. Delta Classic Scholarship recipients are Jude Alexander, Katy, Texas; Chandler Arel, Cabot; Lillie Lawson, Houston, Arkansas; Wyatt Rongey, Booneville; Andrew Warren, Fayetteville; Adam Whitfield, Little Rock; Matthew Woolard, Corning; and Amy Webb, Frisco, Texas.

James L. Barrentine Endowed Scholarship recipients are Evan Buckner, Pine Bluff; Neal Benson, Manila; Charlie Farr, Proctor; and Caleb Swears, Carlisle. Barrentine, a former CSES department head, organized alumni and friends who initiated the benefit golf tournament to support scholarships prior to his retirement in 2006.

"The Delta Classic has been very beneficial to our program," said CSES department head Robert Bacon. "The scholarship money it has generated over the past 19 years has given numerous students from the Arkansas Delta the opportunity to get their degree from the U of A. We are extremely grateful for all those involved for another successful tournament."

Tournament winners were:

• First Flight, CORTEVA agriscience (Josh Wilson, Spencer Martin and Chet Crook, Jonesboro; Adam Compton, North Little Rock)
• Second Flight, Producers Rice Mill (Keith Glover, Jason Earney and Johnny Sullivan, Stuttgart; John Lorick, DeWitt)
• Third Flight, U of A Weed Science (Bob Scott, Stuttgart; Ward Hanna, Paul Leach, Cabot; Chuck Capps, Star City)

Corporate sponsors for the tournament were Arkansas Farm Bureau and CORTEVA agriscience, the Agriculture Division of DowDuPont.

Hole sponsors were Ag Heritage Farm Credit Services, Bayer CropScience, Jim Barrentine, Gowan USA, Greenway Equipment, Producers Rice Mill, RiceCo, Riceland Foods, Syngenta & NK Seeds, Bumpers College's CSES and entomology departments, UA Rice Agronomy and UA Weed Science. Jim and Doris Barrentine also provided breakfast and coffee. Beverage donations were made by Adam Compton, Chuck Farr, Glenn Kernodle and Darrin Malone. Golf balls and towels were provided by Arkansas Farm Bureau.
