Free Percussion Workshop is Going to Be a Hit

UAMusic and the Community Music School are holding a free Day of Percussion on Feb. 10 on the U of A campus. Join them as they celebrate everything percussion in this annual event. Participate in clinics and enjoy performances by guest artist Daniel Moore, the U of A Percussion Ensemble, and local high school groups. A special clinic on Latin percussion will be given by Fernando Valencia, as well as a Drumset Clinic by Chris Teal.

Improve musicianship and expertise in the areas of Latin percussion, mallet technique, and drum set percussion through informative and engaging clinics. Participants will also have the opportunity to hear performances from local high school percussion ensembles including the Fayetteville High School Percussion Ensemble directed by Matt Brusca, the Har-Ber High School Percussion Ensemble directed by C.J. Morris, and the Bentonville High School Percussion Ensemble directed by Nick Fernandez. After a full day of events, the University of Arkansas Percussion Ensemble along with Moore will conclude the event in a final performance.

Meet the Instructors

Dan Moore is professor of music and associate director of the University of Iowa School of Music. As head of Iowa Percussion, he has created an award winning student-centric program that encompasses contemporary chamber music, concert percussion, electronic music, steel band, traditional Chinese drumming and other ethnic music, and improvisation. Iowa Percussion nurtures the serious study and creative exploration of the percussive arts.

Fernando Valencia is currently a Lecturer at the University of Arkansas in the areas of Applied Percussion and Latin American Music. Formerly the principal percussionist of the National Wind Symphony of Colombia, he has also performed with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, The Bogota Philharmonic and the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey among others. Valencia currently performs as a percussionist with the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, Artosphere Festival Orchestra, Fayetteville Jazz Collective and co-leads the NAMA award winning salsa/latin jazz band Calle Soul.

Chris Teal teaches drum set and popular music at the University of Arkansas and the Jazz Workshops for the U of A Community Music School. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music and Whitworth University, Teal is the co-director of the Institute for Creative Music. Before relocating to Fayetteville, where he plays with the U of A Faculty Jazz Quintet, the Jake Hertzog Trio, the Matt Smith Group, and TheatreSquared, he was one of the most in-demand drummers in western New York, performing with the IfCM Collective, Dave Rivello Ensemble, the Mighty High and Dry, John Nyerges Trio, and Silver Arrow Band. Chris has released three albums with his band Quintopus on ears&eyes Records (Voyage to Ornoc, April Showers, and Prehistoric Beach) and three albums with the Institute for Creative Music Collective on Outside in Music Records (Volume 1, A Tribute to Prince, and A Tribute to Bjork.)

The Community Music School is the outreach arm of the Department of Music in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and offers high-quality music programs to students of all ages and levels. By providing a quality foundation for students to reach their greatest musical potential, the school's programs nurture the creative spirit for personal growth and satisfaction.
