U of A Student Interns with The Washington Center

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Brennan Hicks, an honors international relations major in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, recently studied and served an internship at The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars in Washington, D.C.

Hicks received the center’s William Burke Leadership Award, a scholarship earned on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, and campus involvement. Hicks served as an International Policy and Diplomacy Fellow at the United Macedonian Diaspora as a part of his internship experience. The non-governmental organization is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and advocates on behalf of Macedonians and Macedonian communities around the globe.

“I am excited to have gained the opportunity to intern with this organization,” said Hicks. “With this placement, I gained real-world insight into the diplomatic issues of international law, identity recognition, and the political processes of international organizations such as the EU and NATO.”

He also completed an academic seminar and attended professional development workshops at The Washington Center.

Hicks is originally from Colleyville, Texas, and came to the University of Arkansas in 2012. He is now in his third year of study and after graduation he plans to attend graduate school to study trade economics and international law before working in the public and foreign service sectors. In 2013, he completed an internship with the International Public Service Programs Office at the Clinton School of Public Service and has also served as a supplemental instructor in macroeconomics for the Enhanced Learning Center. He is the son of Brett and Susan Hicks.

The Washington Center was founded in 1975 and is an independent, nonprofit organization that works to connect college students with academic seminars, internships, and professional development opportunities in the District of Columbia that match their interests and career goals. The center offers programming during the summer, as well as the fall and spring semesters. In addition to the D.C. Internship Program, The Washington Center also coordinates a number of other educational and professional development programs, available to students with a range of career interests.

In addition to the scholarships offered by the organization, U of A students who are also residents of Arkansas are eligible to receive financial support through the Arkansas Department of Higher Education to attend The Washington Center.

A representative of The Washington Center will be on campus on Tuesday, Oct. 14. An information session will take place at 3 p.m. in Silas Hunt Hall, room 223.
