RESPECT Receives Award for Outstanding Research

RESPECT wins Outstanding Research Award at 2013 Regional BACCHUS Peer Education Conference

RESPECT was recognized with the Outstanding Research Award last weekend at the BACCHUS Area 6 Peer Education Conference in Tyler, Texas. The award goes to the peer education group that uses research in relation to its peer education programming and contributes to the field of peer education.

RESPECT, short for Rape Education Services by Peers Encouraging Conscious Thought, is a peer education program of the Pat Walker Health Center STAR central office.

RESPECT has been utilizing a modified version of Burt's Rape Myth Acceptance Scale as a pre-test/post-test with its classroom presentations for the past 12 years. Over this time, they have consistently shown significant difference in attitudes and beliefs related to sexual assault in relation to their presentation that addresses rape prevention through countering rape myths, dissecting rape culture, and instructing about bystander intervention.

Furthermore, RESPECT strives to use the latest concepts of research available with regards to sexual violence prevention through its presentations, outreach exhibits, and other programs.
