College is more than classes and exams. Whether you're adjusting to campus life; getting along with roommates; missing family or friends back home; worrying about grades or scholarships; feeling uncertain about graduation; or navigating anxiety, stress, depression, or other mental health concerns, you don't have to face it alone. Talking about it can help. That's why the clinicians at Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) are here for you.

Conveniently located on campus, students can walk in for an initial consultation - no appointment needed - Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

In the event of a mental health emergency, CAPS has a 24-hour emergency crisis hotline at 479-575-5276, which is available 365 days a year - even on holidays, weekends and school breaks.

How to Get Started at CAPS

Getting started is as easy as walking in the front door. Located on the second floor of Pat Walker Health Center, CAPS offers initial consultations without appointments. Simply talk to the intake team at CAPS' front desk, and they'll help you connect with a mental health clinician who can match you to the appropriate care needed. You will need to fill out some required paperwork before your 30-minute meeting with the clinician begins.

What is a Consultation?

A consultation is when you meet with a CAPS mental health clinician to share the nature of your concerns, existing coping skills, additional resources or strategies, and what services are available. After this discussion, the clinician will determine the most appropriate next steps based on CAPS' Care Matching Model.

Steps might include any combination of referrals, such as ongoing individual counseling services with CAPS, groups or workshops, case management or a referral to a community provider, if appropriate for the student.

What Types of Services Are Available at CAPS?

CAPS offers a variety of services for students including:

  • Individual counseling

  • Group therapy

  • Workshops

  • Case management services

  • Emergency mental health services

  • Psychological assessments and testing

  • Consultation services

  • Outreach and prevention

How Much Does It Cost to Use Services at CAPS?

The Student Health & Wellness Fee pays for most CAPS services including initial consultations, short-term individual counseling, group therapy, case management, 24-hour mental health emergency services, referral services, outreach services and mental health consultations. Assessment services, if recommended, are not included in the Student Health & Wellness Fee. Please ask your CAPS provider for information regarding assessment charges.

There is a $20 no-show/late cancellation fee for missed appointments or appointments not canceled by 4:45 p.m. the workday before your appointment. Any charges from CAPS will appear in your Workday account.

CAPS is located at 525 N. Garland Ave. on the corner of Garland and Maple avenues. Office hours are Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday. To contact CAPS, call 479-575-5276.
