Students in the U of A International and Global Studies program had the opportunity to engage with United Nations Ambassador David Fernández Puyana during a special classroom visit focused on international relations, diplomacy and contemporary global challenges. Puyana spoke with students about his professional experiences and answered questions, fostering dialogue between students and an accomplished practitioner in the field.
The visit took place in INST 46003: Peace Studies: Approaches and Theory, taught by Dr. Taylor Downs. The course explores the foundations of peace studies, including theoretical approaches to conflict, justice and global cooperation. Puyana's visit gave students the opportunity to connect classroom discussions with the realities of diplomatic practice.
"I'm very grateful that we had the opportunity to hear from Ambassador Puyana this week," Downs said. "In his conversation with my students, he shared his perspective on life as a diplomat, as well as what is most important in diplomacy and mediation, emphasizing the need for humility, trust and a willingness to take risks." Downs continued, "This message reinforced a topic we frequently discuss in peace studies: the importance of relationships in peacebuilding. Through sharing his experiences, Ambassador Puyana provided valuable insights into how diplomats work with local actors to facilitate peace processes."
Puyana is an international diplomat based in Geneva. He is a legal scholar and an advocate for human rights, peacebuilding and multilateral cooperation. Throughout his career, he has contributed to global conversations on dialogue, diplomacy and sustainable peace, bringing extensive experience to his engagement with students at the U of A.
The Department of International and Global Studies extends its appreciation to Dr. Laurence Hare and Dr. Rogelio Garcia Contreras for their collaboration in making this visit possible.
