Every January 27 marks the annual international Holocaust Remembrance Day.
This year the U of A Italian Program will commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day on Wednesday, Jan. 28, with the screening of Giorgio Treves's 1938 – Diversi (1938 – Different) at 5 p.m. in Kimpel Hall 102. This documentary film sets out to describe what the implementation of the "Racial Laws" meant for Italian Jews and how the population, both Jewish and non-Jewish, reacted to racism and persecution. The film will show the articles, cartoons, comic strips, and short films with which Jews were transformed in the space of a few months into "diversi" or "different" people, and then into out-and-out enemies of the nation.
The film will be in Italian with English subtitles. The duration is 62 minutes. Refreshments will follow.
This event is made possible by the support of the Italian, International and Global Studies, and Jewish Studies Programs.
