You're invited to the Fall Flannel Festival from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Union Mall.

Midterms are finished and finals are on the horizon. Whether you're a first-year student or close to graduation, the middle of a semester can leave many students, faculty and staff members feeling overwhelmed and anxious about the work ahead. Add the holidays into the mix, and the calendar fills up quickly.

That's why this November, the teams at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and University Housing are encouraging everyone to take a break and join us at the Fall Flannel Festival from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Union Mall.

"Our annual Fall Flannel Festival is a cozy escape from what can feel like the chaos of college — whether that's midterms, group projects or homework," said Hannah Doty, CAPS mental health clinician. "To get in the spirit of the event, we're encouraging guests to wear flannel—but it's not required."

The event offers free giveaways, relaxing activities and on-site campus resources, including stress-relief tips, self-care ideas and ways to reconnect with yourself.

"Self-care is something many of us put last on our to-do list when schedules get overloaded, and there's too much to do," Doty said. "It's important to remember to take care of yourself — both mentally and physically — so you're better equipped to manage any challenges."

The team at CAPS offered these tips to help manage stress:

  • Be intentional. Pick one thing each day that helps you feel centered and energized.

  • Reflect. Try journaling, meditation or prayer to clear your mind and organize your thoughts.

  • Pause. Make space for quiet time, even if it's just five minutes of stillness.

  • Reach out. Asking for help or connection is a powerful act of self-awareness.

  • Move and nourish. Regular activity, rest, hydration and good food all support mental health.

For more stress management and self-care tips, visit the resources tables at the Fall Flannel Festival. The CAPS team will also share information about on-campus counseling and drop-in services available year-round.
