Earlier this week, the Spanish section of the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures welcomed the arrival of eight new graduate students from across the globe: Aaron Burrell, Daniel Camacho Garcia, Yeremi Camacho Vazquez, Lillie Dawes, Yasmelin Gonzalez, Nugzari Kopadze, Kaden Reed and Mateo Sanchez Rivera.
Their interests cover everything from pursuing a doctorate upon graduation to teaching Spanish in elementary and secondary classrooms and working in translation/interpretation.
Former M.A. students have gone on to doctoral programs at, most recently, University of Texas, Austin; Arizona State University; and the University of California, Riverside, as well as into careers in teaching, diplomacy and translation.
The Spanish M.A. program offers students classes with distinguished faculty experts. Students develop an understanding of critical theories in literature and cultural studies and use this to perform critical analysis of cultural objects from across the Spanish-speaking world, deepening their understanding of the ways these areas have intersected with and impacted the international landscape. Students on the pedagogy track also develop a strong skillset to take with them as they shape the future of Spanish education in the classroom setting.
This class of 2027 is the largest cohort in Spanish in the past decade. This demonstrates the Spanish's faculty's continued drive to support student success and the U of A's increasing visibility as a world-class educational institution for literary and cultural studies in Spanish.
If you or someone you know is interested in joining a future cohort, contact the Spanish M.A. coordinator, professor Rachel ten Haaf at rtenhaaf@uark.edu.
