Korean Language and Culture Course Launches at U of A Amid Global K-Culture Boom
For the first time in its history, the University of Arkansas Department of World Languages, Literatures & Cultures is introducing an introductory Korean language and culture course — launching at a moment when global enthusiasm for Korean culture continues to rise dramatically.
Titled "Korean ABC and Culture for Beginners," this 1-credit course is part of WLLC's Special Topics offerings for fall 2025 and is open to all students. The course runs during the second 8-week session, from Oct. 8 to Dec. 4, meeting on Wednesdays from 2-3:35 p.m. in Kimpel Hall 408. It will be taught by professor Sung Hye Yang, an experienced instructor specializing in Korean language and culture.
This beginner-level course introduces Hangul (the Korean alphabet), essential expressions and everyday conversational skills. Students will also engage in hands-on cultural activities such as Korean crafts and traditional food preparation, gaining a well-rounded foundation in both language and culture.
The launch coincides with a surge in Korean language learning across the United States. According to the Modern Language Association, enrollments in Korean courses increased by 38.3% — the highest growth rate among the top 15 most commonly studied languages. This remarkable trend highlights a growing academic and cultural interest in Korean language education nationwide.
Further fueling global curiosity, Korean literature received international acclaim in 2025 when celebrated author Han Kang became the first Korean recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, shining a spotlight on Korea's rich cultural heritage.
"This course offers a fun and accessible gateway into a language and culture that are captivating millions worldwide," said professor Yang. "We're proud to expand WLLC's offerings to include Korean, reflecting the university's commitment to global language education."
