Celebrate Earth Day Tuesday With Week's Worth of Environmentally Responsible Events
Throughout the week, the U of A hosts a diverse range of events for students, faculty, and staff to engage in environmentally conscious efforts.

On Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, Earth Day will celebrate its 55th anniversary, with an estimated 192 countries and over a billion people worldwide participating. This remarkable milestone underscores the enduring dedication of the diverse Earth Day movement, which has remained steadfast in its mission to unite people for a brighter future. For five decades, Earth Day has spearheaded global efforts to raise awareness and take decisive action on pressing environmental concerns. Our unwavering commitment lies in advocating for the well-being of our planet, encompassing the health of our air, oceans, soil, ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.
"Earth Week presents an ideal platform to recognize our progress while simultaneously educating our community about the challenges that lie ahead.," said Eric Boles, director of the Office for Sustainability.
MONDAY
Earth Week will kick off Monday, April 21, with a Bird Safe initiative walk at 8:00 am at the Union Mall. This group monitors window collisions and documents any fatalities that may occur. This event occurs at the same time and place on Wednesday and Friday as well. The Union Sustainability Team is hosting a lunch compost crew from 12:30-2:30 pm at the Union Food court where volunteers will help compost food scraps. This is also a recurring event and will happen at the same time and place on Friday. Lastly, Monday will be wrapped up with a lecture titled "Designing Earth for 10 Billion People" by Dr. Marty Matlock, and this will take place at the Schollmeier Auditorium in Vol Walker Hall.
TUESDAY (INTERNATIONAL EARTH DAY)
International Earth Day will start with an Earth Day Celebration and Farmer's Market hosted by ASG and the Office for Sustainability. This will be an opportunity for students to come participate in various activities such as natural dying, making your own flowerpots, planting your own flower or herb, engaging with groups working in sustainability on campus and in the community, and much more. This event will be from 9:30-1:30 at the Union Mall. Overlapping with this event is the Sustainability Capstone poster presentation by the Sustainability Minor program which will be from 11:00-1:00 in the Union Flag room. Following the poster presentations, at 1:15 in Room 504 of the Student Union, Carson Kreitzer will present "TRASH: A Playwright's Journey in the Arctic." Lastly, the Union Sustainability Team will be hosting a dinner compost crew from 5:30-7:30 in the Union food court, this will also happen at the same time and place on Wednesday and Thursday.
WEDNESDAY
At 11:15 in ARKU 512, Office for Sustainability and Housing will be hosting a Lunch and Learndetailing housing's Leave Green program. Anyone in attendance will be eligible for a free lunch from Where the Wild Greens Are. Later that afternoon at 2 pm, the Union Sustainability Team is hosting an Insight Forum in ARKU 312, where Dr. Sarah Lewis of Edgewater Consulting will present on leadership in sustainability.
THURSDAY
Residents Interhall Congress is hosting Ecofest on Old Main Lawn from 11:00-2:00. This will be an opportunity to engage with likeminded peers, participate in eco-friendly activities, and gather information about sustainability on campus and abroad.
FRIDAY
Finish your Earth week by participating in a Bird Safe Initiative walk or join the Union at lunch for the compost crew. And continue celebrating Earth Day into the weekend by joining The Collective NWA at the Mt. Sequoyah Claap Auditorium for their 2050: Party Like the World is on Fire event, which will be a sustainable concert, art exhibition and craft market.
About the Office for Sustainability: The mission of the University of Arkansas Office for Sustainability (OFS) is to motivate, facilitate, and coordinate responsible practices through partnerships with students, faculty, and staff across all campus departments.
