A collaboration between the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Fayetteville Public Library is bringing a screening of a new documentary, Counted Out, that highlights the importance of math literacy in today's data rich society and how some traditional education methods have left many behind.

The 90-minute film shares personal stories, expert interviews and scenes of math transformation in action. After the screening, U of A faculty member Kim McComas will moderate a discussion panel. Panelists include university faculty members Matt Clay and Shauna Morimoto, as well as Lorie Huff, director of mathematics for Fayetteville Public Schools, and Sarah Moore, Ward 2 Fayetteville City Council member.

Counted Out has been selected to screen at dozens of film festivals, including SXSW EDU 2025, the San Francisco International Film Festival and Original Thinkers in Telluride, Colorado. The film is dedicated to civil rights activist and MacArthur Fellow Bob Moses.

The screening will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Fayetteville Public Library in the event center. Those interested in attending need to register to reserve a seat.
