Department of Mathematical Sciences Hosts Conference on Research in Topology

The Redbud Topology Conference will be held on the U of A campus this weekend, Friday, Feb. 28, to Sunday, March 2. This is the 14th annual meeting of the Redbud Topology Conference series that rotates between the U of A, the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. All talks will be held in White Engineering Hall, room 209.

The central theme of this year's meeting is applications of the braid group in low-dimensional topology, namely, dimensions 2, 3 and 4.  Researchers from across the United States will gather to present the latest results and to share ideas across the specific fields. The following will be speaking at the conference:

John Baldwin (Boston College)
Katherine Booth (Georgia Tech)
Keiko Kawamuro (Iowa)
Michael Klug (University of Chicago)
Siddhi Krishna (Columbia)
Miriam Kuzbary (Amherst)
Dan Margalit (Vanderbilt)
Andrew Putman (Notre Dame)
Angela Wu (Bucknell)

A workshop for graduate students, led by professors Kawamuro, Kuzbary and Margalit, is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28, in the afternoon.  This will help prepare the students for the main research talks on Saturday and Sunday. Graduate students will also get a chance to talk about their work during lightning talk sessions on Saturday.

This conference is supported by the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the National Science Foundation.

Additionally, Professor Krishna is delivering a colloquium titled: Braids: What, How and Why at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28. All are invited to attend. This event is hosted by the student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics.
