Hutchinson's career in public service began in 1982 when he was appointed to the role of U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas by then-President Ronald Reagan. Starting in 1996, Hutchinson was elected to three consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving the 3rd District of Arkansas. He also served as the administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration and under secretary for Border and Transportation Security. In 2014, Hutchinson was elected as the 46th governor of the state of Arkansas and served two terms in that role. His administration created over 100,000 new jobs for Arkansans and led a national initiative to increase computer science education. Hutchinson is a former chair of the National Governors Association.
Since leaving office in 2023, Hutchinson ran a campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, pushing for enhanced border security and a balanced federal budget. In 2025, Hutchinson joined the U of A School of Law's faculty as an executive in residence. He teaches a course on leadership in state and federal government.
