Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) is excited to announce that our popular adventure therapy group, in partnership with University Recreation + Wellness, is being offered again this Spring 2025! Titled "Experiencing Self and Others: UREC," this therapy group is an engaging, experiential approach designed to help U of A students overcome challenges such as social anxiety, conflict resolution, and trust issues.

WHO CAN JOIN?

Any U of A student is welcome to participate. All therapy groups offered by CAPS are included as part of your student health and wellness fee—meaning there's no additional cost for you! However, before joining a group, you are required to complete an initial consultation appointment with CAPS and a group screening during the semester you wish to join a group.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Participants will engage in weekly sessions featuring a mountain biking clinic, a climbing clinic, and a kayak rolling clinic. These activities are designed to build self-worth, enhance problem-solving skills, and foster community connections through direct experiences in nature. "Adventure therapy offers an alternative pathway for students who might be hesitant to participate in traditional therapy," said Amy Ference, a CAPS mental health clinician. "It provides opportunities for deep, meaningful self-reflection while actively engaging in activities that build resilience and trust in oneself and others."

WHY JOIN?

By participating in these adventure-based sessions, you'll not only develop strategies to reduce stress and overcome personal challenges but also forge lasting connections with peers. It's an opportunity to explore your strengths and gain confidence in a supportive, dynamic environment.

WHAT'S REQUIRED TO JOIN

To ensure the group is the right fit, interested students must:

1.Complete an initial consultation appointment with CAPS.

2.Participate in a group screening during the semester you wish to join.

GROUP OFFERINGS FOR SPRING 2025:

  • Mondays: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
