Warm Up Before Finals With Cruise to Campus

U of A students, faculty and staff gather on Old Main Lawn for Cruise to Campus Wednesday.
The Office for Sustainability will host its next Cruise to Campus event from 7:30-10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, on Old Main Lawn.
Since its introduction in 2023, Cruise to Campus Wednesdays have aimed to reward students, staff and faculty for using active transportation to get to and around campus. Cruise to Campus creates a gathering space for individuals arriving to campus by bike and provides participants with campus resources, a warm breakfast and a supportive bicycling community.
Many think of bicycling as a warm-weather activity. But in reality, any day can be a biking day with the right mindset and preparation. As temperatures drop, it's more important than ever to double check the forecast when getting ready to ride. Here are some quick tips for bicycling in cold or wet weather:
- Layer, layer, layer! Wearing multiple layers can help you stay comfortable in all temperatures throughout the day. Packable layers make it easy to shed as needed and pack extras in a backpack.
- Pack a pair of gloves. Hands are often the first to get cold during a chilly ride. Having gloves readily available can help riders stay warm.
- Try a clip-on fender for rainy days. Adding a fender to your bicycle can do wonders for helping you stay dry. Plus, most clip on fenders are affordable and super easy to install.
- Keep ebike batteries warm. Cold temperatures can make batteries drain more quickly. Store your ebike in a warm, dry place and ride in a way that conserves power.
- Trust your gut! Even the most commited bicyclists know when to take a day off. If the weather conditions make you feel unsafe, use a different mode of transportation for the day.
Cold and wet weather doesn't have to force bicyclists from riding. This time of year can be especially enjoyable by bike, as it gives riders the opportunity to see their community from a new perspective. Cooler temperatures, colorful landscapes and crisp air can make your morning commute all the more enjoyable. Plus, there's a certain satisfaction that comes with accomplishing something before the day has really begun.
Some riders may even notice that biking saves them time. No more waiting for cars to defrost or circling campus to find a parking spot. Have a plan in place so you can be ready to ride at any time. Biking to work or school can help make the most of shorter days, offering riders a way to get outside and enjoy the limited amounts of sunshine this time of year has to offer.
The Office for Sustainability welcomes all to Cruise to Campus Wednesdays. Whether you ride every day or haven't riden in years, we invite you to join us for the last Cruise to Campus of the fall 2024 semester. Come warm up with us from 7:30-10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, on Old Main Lawn.
