Día de los Muertos: A Celebration of Life and Remembrance
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a vibrant Mexican tradition that honors deceased loved ones and celebrates their lives. Held on Nov. 1 and 2, it blends indigenous rituals with Catholic practices, embracing the belief that souls return to reunite with their families. Colorful altars, or ofrendas, adorned with photos, favorite foods and symbolic items, create a joyful atmosphere that reflects love and remembrance.
This year, the Spanish Program has prepared an altar on the second floor of Kimpel Hall to honor this tradition, and we invite everyone to stop by. You can participate by writing the name of a loved one you wish to honor on one of the colorful cards provided and placing it in a memory jar.
We invite you to visit the altar to experience this celebration, and please help yourself to a few of the fresh snacks available. By doing so, you'll be part of an important tradition shared by many Spanish-speaking communities around the world.
The Spanish Program is also hosting a special giveaway in honor of this celebration on Instagram (@spanishuarkansas). Enter for a chance to win a $50 gift card to the most exclusive Mexican restaurant in town!
