Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony Concert Tonight
U of A Bands will hold its first concert of the fall 2024 season tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Faulkner Performing Arts Center.
The Wind Symphony is under the direction of assistant director of bands Chase Jones with assistance from graduate conductor Andrew Cox. The band will begin the evening with the following selections:
- This Silver World (2023) - Steven Bryant (b. 1972)
- Pathways (2019) - Danielle Fisher (b. 1986)
- Fantasia In G Major (1703/7) - Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) arr. Goldman & Leist
- Juba Dance (1932) - Florence Price (1888-1953), arr. Bocook
- Chester (1956) - William Schuman (1910-1992)
The Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Chris Knighten, director of bands. The group will follow with the following pieces:
- Fanfare Politeia (2021) - Kim Archer (b. 1971)
- Toccata Marziale (1924). - Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958)
- This Cruel Moon (2017) - John Mackey (b. 1973)
- Second Suite in F (1911) - Gustav Holst (1874-1934)
- I. March
- II. Song Without Words - "I'll Love My Love"
- III. Song of the Blacksmith
- IV. Fantasia on "The Dargason"
All concerts are free to attend and will be held at the Faulkner Performing Arts Center on the campus of the U of A. Concerts will also be livestreamed at bands.uark.edu.
Participation in concert bands is open to all U of A students, regardless of major. Students interested in auditioning for a band can email bands@uark.edu for more information.
About the University of Arkansas Bands: The University of Arkansas Bands Program, part of the Department of Music in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, began in 1874 and is one of the oldest band programs in the country. The program has seven ensembles including the Razorback Marching Band, Hogwild Band, and five concert bands with over 400 student members representing every college at the university.
