The U of A is and continues to become one of the most bike-friendly universities in the country, situated on the Razorback Greenway and surrounded by world-class mountain biking opportunities. On-campus trails and growing bike infrastructure mean that riding a bike on campus is easier and more accessible than ever. In 2023, the U of A was re-evaluated and renewed as a Gold Rated Bike Friendly University. However, safe and secure bike parking has historically been a challenge, especially for students living in residence halls.

In the U of A annual Commuter Survey, one of the most cited factors discouraging students from bringing bikes to campus is not having a safe place to park them or not feeling comfortable parking them outside. Students living in residence halls have long needed a safe place to park their bikes when not in use, especially overnights and during long breaks. Between August 2019, when Adohi Hall opened, and January 2022, 62 bikes on campus were reported stolen. That's an average of two bikes per month and a total value of over $42,000.

The Adohi Bicycle Lounge is a recent addition to campus that aims to start solving this issue. Housed within the Adohi Creative Community, the Bicycle Lounge provides limited-access, indoor bike storage for Adohi residents. Inside the lounge are bike racks where students can lock up, made to fit all styles and frame sizes. The lounge also has an air pump, some basic tools and resources to help guide students as they explore Northwest Arkansas by bike.

The Bicycle Lounge still has openings for this school year, and Adohi residents can permit a space for only $25 per semester. The U of A Office for Sustainability hopes to build on this model in the coming semesters, providing solutions to more campus facilities, not just housing! Adohi residents can fill out this Hogsync survey to apply for an opening.

About the Office for Sustainability: The mission of the University of Arkansas Office for Sustainability is to motivate, facilitate and coordinate responsible practices through partnerships with students, faculty, and staff across all campus departments.
