The inaugural Convening for Consensus Conference is coming to Arkansas on June 11-12 at the Don Tyson Center for Agricultural Sciences in Fayetteville.

The conference will focus on exploring policy, economics, animal welfare and research in lameness across species of food animals. Lameness is when an animal has lost its ability to properly use one or more limbs.

Animal agriculture leaders who are experts in causes, prevention and treatment of lameness in food animal species will lead an interactive conversation with participants. The goal is to collaborate and create a research-based report addressing bone health and lameness.

The event will be sponsored by the National Institute for Animal Agriculture's Animal Disease Issues and Emergency Management Council. The conference planning committee includes:

  • Lucas Pantaleon, NIAA Council co-chair
  • Adnan Alrubaye, assistant professor of poultry science at the U of A
  • Kaitlyn Briggs, Dairy Management, Inc.
  • Doug Ensley, Boehringer-Ingelheim

The cost to attend the conference is $200 for NIAA members and $250 for non-members. Those interested in attending can find more information and registration instructions.

Alrubaye, who is also associate director of the graduate program in cell and molecular biology, conducts research through the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science within the U of A System Division of Agriculture and the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences.
