Distinguished Lectures Committee to host John Green Nov. 9

Students, faculty and staff can reserve a free ticket to see John Green starting at noon on Oct. 30.

New York Times bestselling author and YouTuber John Green will deliver a moderated question and answer session as part of the Distinguished Lectures Committee's series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Fayetteville Town Center.

The event will be ticketed, but tickets will be free for anyone who is able to reserve one. Ticket reservations for students, faculty and staff who have a current uark.edu email address will be available starting at noon on Oct. 30. Any remaining tickets will be available for the public starting at noon on Oct. 31. The tickets will be available online.

A livestream will be also available and will be hosted on the UA Productions YouTube channel. There will be a recording available for the U of A campus community at video.uark.edu for 30 days post lecture.

Green is a New York Times bestselling author of books popular in the Young Adult genre including Looking for Alaska, Turtles All the Way Down, Paper Towns, An Abundance of Katherines and The Fault in Our Stars, the last of which became a major motion picture in 2014.

He has sold more than 24 million copies of his books in 55 languages across the world. Though most of Green's books focus on fictional teens' "coming of age," his most recent book, The Anthropocene Reviewed, was developed from his podcast of the same name and examines different aspects of the world we live in today.

Additionally, Green is well known for his career as a YouTuber with his brother, Hank Green. Together, they created the YouTube channels vlogbrothers and Crash Course, the latter of which provides free educational videos on a variety of topics.

Between the two accounts, the Green brothers have nearly 20 million subscribers, over 2.8 billion views and are regarded by many as "pioneers" in the YouTube world. In January 2023, Arizona State University announced that they would be partnering with Crash Course to provide college courses through YouTube.

Recently, John Green has worked to raise awareness about tuberculosis and lower the cost of the drugs used to treat the disease. He's also spoken out against book bans, particularly those that prohibit his books from being on library shelves. Through posting about and explaining these and other issues on his social media platforms, Green simultaneously raises awareness and educates the public.
