Faculty, staff and students engaged in high impact educational practices (HIP) are invited to submit a presentation proposal to the "Are We Still HIP and Well? Examining the High Impact Practices and Wellness at the U of A in 2022" Conference.

Proposals are being accepted in the following categories: 15-minute presentation, 45-minute presentation, 45-minute panel presentation or poster presentation. Submissions are due Saturday, April 30, and cross-discipline collaboration is encouraged.

The conference will be Friday, July 29, at the U of A's new Cordia Harrington Center for Excellence and will include break-out sessions, lunch, poster sessions and small group brainstorming sessions. "With the help and support of our collaborators, we plan to invite our colleagues from across the SEC to attend - especially those who are focused on work and research in student success and high impact practices in 2023," said Deborah Korth, the conference's co-coordinator and director of Student Success for Fulbright College. "In addition to being fun and informative, this year's event will also serve as a prototype for next year."

Conference organizers outlined five goals for conference success, including to:

  • Highlight all 11 High Impact Educational Practices implemented on our campus
  • Examine activities concerning the wellness and well-being of students, faculty and/or staff
  • Focus on promoting a culture of wellness, high impact practices and inclusiveness
  • Promote conversations among faculty and staff centered on students and student success programs and projects
  • Build a more inclusive atmosphere by offering choice of in-person and/or virtual attendance options

According to the American Association of Colleges and University, the 11 high impact practices include:

  1. First-year seminars
  2. Common intellectual experiences
  3. Learning communities
  4. Writing-intensive courses
  5. Collaborative assignments and projects
  6. Undergraduate research
  7. Diversity/global Learning
  8. ePortfolios
  9. Service learning/Community-based learning
  10. Internships
  11. Capstone courses and projects.

Additionally, Korth said that the U of A  community considers the 12th HIP, Wellness Programs, which will also be featured at the event.

This event is sponsored by the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences Student Success Team; the Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education; the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; the Student Success Center; the Teaching and Faculty Support Center; Teaching Innovation and Pedagogical Support; and many other campus partners.
