This Wednesday, April 14, at 5 p.m., the Russian Program will host a lecture by professor Victoria Khiterer of Millersville University, entitled "Multi-ethnic Empire: Ukrainians, Poles and Jews under Tsarist Rule."

The lecture explores how Ukrainians, Poles and Jews appeared under Tsarist Rule, and what their status in the Russian Empire was.

By examining the everyday life, traditions, religion and culture of the national minorities, this talk discusses inter-ethnic relations and shows how the Russian nationalities policy provoked the birth of national-liberation movements among the national minorities and encouraged their struggles against the Tsarist regime. 

The talk analyzes the political and economic developments of these nations and their contributions to the growth of the Russian Empire.

Professor Victoria Khiterer is an associate professor of history at Millersville University. She works on the history of Jews in Ukraine and the Russian Empire. Among her publications are Jewish Pogroms in Kiev during the Russian Civil War, 1918-1920 (Lewiston, Lampeter: The Edwin Mellen Press, 2015) and Jewish City or Inferno of Russian Israel? A History of the Jews in Kiev before February 1917 (Boston: Academic Studies Press, 2016).
