Innovative Management Series Offers Essential and Innovative New Skills

Managers can advance their careers by enhancing their skills and learning innovative strategies during two spring classes in the Innovative Management Series.

Register online for "Be a Manager They Want to Follow: Culture, Team Building, Motivation and Succession Planning" on Feb. 8 and "Coaching, Improvement Plans, Documentation and Termination" on April 5.

Classes are set for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Global Campus in Rogers, 3300 Market St., Suite 402. The cost is $249 for each class. University of Arkansas faculty, staff and students can receive a 10 percent discount.

A recent Gallup poll indicated that 70 to 75 percent of non-manager employees are not motivated or productive. This class helps managers develop an effective style that will serve throughout their careers by learning to support, motivate and empower workers through mentoring, building a collaborative team, and creating a positive work culture that aligns with organizational goals.

The "Coaching, Improvement Plans, Documentation and Termination" on April 5 provides managers with tools to help struggling employees, giving them an opportunity to improve. Continuous coaching and quantitative improvement plans can save an organization the cost of recruiting, hiring and onboarding a new employee. If all else fails, managers will be prepared to follow best practices regarding documentation and termination.

Both spring classes have been pre-approved for Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recertification hours, an added value for those that hold SHRM certifications and must accrue continuing education hours to maintain their certification status.

Two other classes in the series: "Transitioning to Manager" and "Recruiting, Interviewing, Hiring and Onboarding" will be offered in fall 2019. Customized training is available for Innovative Management Series topics, as well as others.

"Over the past 18 months, we received multiple requests from clients for customized training in management education areas," Erin Morgan-Dickey, program coordinator said. "That led to the creation of the Innovative Management Series, which allows any manager to take advantage of this knowledge. These programs truly demonstrate how the Global Campus is responding to the unique training needs of organizations in Northwest Arkansas."

These classes, customized training and other educational options are showcased on the U of A Professional and Workforce Development website, managed by the Global Campus. The design of the training.uark.edu website changed this week to align with the expanded mission of the Global Campus. That mission includes the support of a one-stop website for all professional and workforce development offerings from the U of A colleges and units.
