UA Chamber Choir Presents 'From Classic to Latin America'

The UA Chamber Choir will give their spring performance in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. The choir, under the direction of conductor Brandon Torres, will present "From Classic to Latin America" with music by Victoria, Hayden, Brahms, Whitacre, Colón-Tarrats, Monier, Solé, and Smith. The concert is  at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10.

Brandon Torres, originally from Puerto Rico, is a graduate student in the Department of Music's choral conducting program. This concert is the final conducting performance for Torres at the University of Arkansas. His faculty mentor, Stephen Caldwell, director of Choral Activities, said that "this is the final test that will demonstrate if Brandon has mastered his conducting skills, piano, vocals, among other disciplines. Everything he has learned over the course of two years will be reflected in the concert." Torres is the first Latin American choral conducting graduate student at the University of Arkansas and the concert shows his passion and pride in Latin American arts.

While the Chamber Choir's program includes standards in choral music — Haydn, Brahms, Whitacre — Torres has chosen to highlight Latin American composers. Taking pride in his Latin American heritage, Brandon has selected pieces by Conrado Monier (Cuba), Emilio Solé (Venezuela), and Rubén Colon-Tarrats (Puerto Rico). Additionally, the choir will collaborate with the UA Latin American Ensemble. Talking about the concert, Torres said, "Everyone can feel something and can connect through music. That's the biggest thing that music has that you do not need borders to express what you want to say or to express a feeling that connects us."

The concert is free and open to the public.
