New Book by Mathematical Sciences Professor Introduces Students to Geometric Group Theory

Geometric group theory is a young field of mathematics that studies the symmetries of objects using algebra and geometry. A new book, Office Hours with a Geometric Group Theorist (Princeton University Press), co-edited by Matt Clay, associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, provides an accessible introduction to this exciting subject.

Each chapter — or "office hour" — of the book, co-edited with Georgia Tech professor Dan Margalit, is written by a leading expert in the field.

Rather than employing the rigid format of most texts in mathematics, each chapter of the book is written in an informal tone and is driven by understanding the examples most central to the field. To assist students entering into mathematical research, each chapter ends with suggestions for future reading and several research projects to investigate.

The print version is available July 11; a digital version is currently available.
