Discount for Summer Literacy Camp Expires Soon

The University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions is offering a Summer Literacy Camp for local elementary students weekday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. July 24 through Aug. 4.

Visit the literacy camp web page for more information and to register. A discount cost of $89 to register expires at midnight Sunday, June 4. The cost of the camp is $99 after that. It is presented by the University of Arkansas Clinic for Literacy and will take place in Peabody Hall.

Participants will be paired one-on-one with a University of Arkansas graduate student. They will be screened to target the areas in most need of improvement and enrichment.

Linda Eilers, a clinical associate professor of childhood education, and Heather Kindall, an assistant professor of childhood and elementary education, created the literacy clinic last year. Returning students attending the clinic's programs have averaged 1.5 years of growth in their reading levels, with some students gaining more than two years of growth, they said.

Each U of A teacher-education student providing intervention for the children understands the science of reading and the various difficulties students face in learning to read. The goal is to teach students strategies that align with what they are already learning in school and that can be transferred to other areas of achievement.
