Virginia San Fratello to Present 'Data Plus Dust' Lecture on April 10
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Virginia San Fratello will present a lecture at 5 p.m. Monday, April 10, in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design lecture series.
San Fratello is a partner at Rael San Fratello and in Emerging Objects, both in Oakland, California. She also is an associate professor in the area of design at San Jose State University.
In her lecture, titled "Data + Dust," San Fratello will discuss the research conducted at Emerging Objects, which is a pioneering design and research company focused on the development of new materials for three-dimensional printing and on the design and fabrication of 3D printed architecture.
The innovative research at Emerging Objects has led to the use of a 3D printer and a computer to manipulate particles of light and bits of data to transform dust from the material world into customized objects and products that serve as new building blocks for the future. Selected examples in San Fratello's presentation will include Bloom, a tempietto 3D printed out of cement, and the Saltygloo, an igloo 3D printed in salt from San Francisco Bay.
Rael San Fratello was the recipient of the Emerging Voices Award given by the Architectural League of New York, Metropolis Magazine's Next Generation Design Award, a finalist in the WPA 2.0 design competition and winner of the Van Alen Institute's Life at the Speed of Rail competition. In 2016, the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) selected San Fratello as the Educator of the Year.
San Fratello holds a Master of Architecture from Columbia University in New York.
This lecture is approved for HSW continuing education credits through the American Institute of Architects and through the American Society of Landscape Architects.
The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, with limited seating.
