Romance Scholar Continues Career in the Department of English

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sean Dempsey, who has been a visiting assistant professor in the Department of English since 2009, will return this fall as an assistant professor in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

Dempsey's teaching and research interests include Romanticism, 18th and 19th century British literature and culture, modernism and modernity, critical theory, ecocriticism, religion and literature, phenomenology and visuality. He has publications in Mosaic, Studies in Romanticism, ELH and The Robert Frost Review.

"The Department of English faculty is extremely proud to have Dr. Dempsey continue his career at the University of Arkansas," said Dorothy Stephens, department chair. "He has proven himself an impressive publisher and great instructor."

Dempsey previously taught at Harvard University and Phillips Exeter Academy. He has held fellowships at the School for Criticism and Theory, the National Humanities Center and institutes in Berlin, Antwerp and Vienna.

"I am very happy to continue my work in Fayetteville," Dempsey said. "Arkansas has been a great home, and I'm looking forward to what the future holds."

Dempsey holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Connecticut College. He earned a Master of Arts and a doctorate in religion and literature from Boston University.
