This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Nov. 7-14

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will host many events this week, including multiple recitals, lectures from guest scholars and artists, art exhibitions, a film screening and a play. Students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to attend these events in the visual and performing arts.

A Debt Repaid: The Legacy of Dr. Fredrick Lee Liebolt, a documentary about the distinguished alumnus, will be Friday, Nov. 7, screened at 6 p.m. in the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House.

Also on Friday, the University of Arkansas Opera Theatre will perform at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Later that evening, University Theatre presents Kin, a play by Bathesheba Doran. The opening performance is at 8 p.m. Friday and will continue until Nov. 16. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Michael Fletcher will give a percussion recital Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m  in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also in Stella Boyle Smith, Katey Adams and Brittany Riley will perform a percussion recital at 3 p.m. and Jamie Stuckey will give a clarinet recital at 5:30 p.m.

Alexander Grisos will perform a trumpet recital Sunday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Master of Fine Arts candidate Bryanna Jaramillo’s art exhibit Into Decay, will close Monday, Nov. 10. Her art has been on display in the Anne Kittrell Art Gallery since Oct. 28. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

The University of Arkansas Tuba and Euphonium Studio will give a recital Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Tuesday, acclaimed poet Dorianne Laux will read from her work as part of the University of Arkansas Program in Creative Writing and Translation Distinguished Readers Series. The reading begins at 7 p.m. in Giffels Auditorium.

Later that evening, the University of Arkansas Voice Studio will give a recital at 8 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Guest scholar William Everett, professor of musicology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will be present “World War One, Propaganda and Orientalist Musical Theater: The Twin Histories of Katinka and Chu Chin Chow” Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m. in Kimpel Hall room 306.

The Department of Art continues its Visiting Artist Lecture Series with Lauren Kalman Thursday, Nov. 13, at 5:30 p.m. in Kimpel Hall room 102.

Following the lecture, the Department of Art will host a reception for the exhibition Luscious: The Body Adorned, which includes work by Kalman, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Gallery.

Katie Martin will give a flute recital accompanied by Kristi Smylie and Michael Shuman, Friday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also in Stella Boyle Smith, Andrew Chu will perform a violin recital at 8 p.m.

Three’s a Crowd. The exhibit will be on display at 1 E. Center St. on the Fayetteville Square, from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday until Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Luscious: The Body Adorned, an exhibition curated by Cynthia Norse Thompson, will continue until Friday, Dec. 5, in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

The Arkansas Experience in the First World War, an exhibition of artifacts including uniforms, helmets, weapons and photos will remain on display through December in the Bogle Exhibit Hall on the 5th floor of Old Main.
