FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mike Johnson, associate vice chancellor for facilities at the University of Arkansas, was honored for his “significant, life-long contributions to the profession of education facilities management.” The Meritorious Service Award was presented during the annual convention of APPA – Leadership in Education, the international professional organization previously known as the Association of Physical Plant Administrators.

The Meritorious Service Award is the group’s highest award for individual service, and is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the recipient’s institution, the profession, and the association.

Johnson became head of U of A facilities management in March, 2004, and has supervised the largest, and longest, construction campaign in university history. The combined renovation, restoration and new construction projects have totaled more than $1 billion in value, while meeting the needs of a rapidly growing student population. Under Johnson’s leadership facilities management has placed an increased emphasis on sustainability, in everything from recycling to energy-saving modernization projects to construction projects designed to earn LEED certification.

APPA is the largest international association of educational institutions and their facilities, including over 1,300 universities, colleges, private and public K-12 schools, museums, libraries, and other organizations dedicated to learning. More than 7,000 educational facilities professionals are active within APPA and its six regional organizations.
