This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Nov. 30-Dec. 6

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will hold many events during the days before final exams including an art exhibition, a guest lecture and several concerts. Students, faculty, staff and friends are encouraged to attend these on-campus and off-campus performances in the visual and performing arts.

Louise Bourgeois’ Topiary: The Art of Improving Nature exhibition may be seen in the Fine Arts Center Gallery from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The exhibition opened on Nov. 7 and will close on Thursday, Dec. 13.

How do I love thee?, a series of opera scenes, will be presented by the Opera Workshop at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. Admission is $5 for the general public and $1 for students with a valid University of Arkansas ID.

Also at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, a Jazz Combos concert will be held in the Arkansas Union. Three jazz combos will perform including a “Gypsy Jazz” quartet, a “Bebop” style trio and a “Funk Ensemble.”

Kim McConniel and Mary Beth Martin will perform a percussion recital at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Saturday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Patrick Bellah will perform a cello recital at 6 p.m.

Later that night, Josh Richardson will perform a guitar recital at 8:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Benjamin Winn will perform a voice recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

That evening in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Andrew Chu will perform a violin recital at 8 p.m.

Traci Petty will perform a trumpet recital at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Tanya Paul, the Ruth G. Hardman Curator of European Art at the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, will present a lecture on the planning Monet and the Seine: Impressions of a River, an exhibition planned for 2014. The lecture will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the Fine Arts Center, room 213.

Also on Tuesday, the University Symphony Orchestra will hold a concert at Har-Ber High School at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $1 for students and $5 for the general public.

Cactus Truck, trio from the Netherlands, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5 in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. Cactus Truck’s visit the university is part of a six-week tour of the United States.

Also on Wednesday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Richard Bobo will perform a bassoon recital at 9 p.m.

Holiday favorites will performed by the University of Arkansas Schola Cantorum, Concert Choir, Inspirational Chorale and Children's Choir for Winterfest: Holiday in Song. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, at University Baptist Church.
